SALT LAKE CITY, UT – MARCH 18: The Northwestern Wildcats fans react after their team is defeated by the Gonzaga Bulldogs during the second round of the 2017 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament at Vivint Smart Home Arena on March 18, 2017 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Northwestern’s season is over. The Wildcats, who had the greatest season in the history of the school, lost a hard fought game to Gonzaga 79-73 in Saturday’s scond round NCAA Tournament matchup in Salt Lake City. It was a very fun ride, for some. The school made the tournament for the first time in 77 years, which is definitely something to be excited about.  So good for them; and good for seemingly every journalist in the entire nation who are all alums of the school.  However, notwithstanding the magnitude of the accomplishment, it was covered exhaustively, and many became somewhat annoyed hearing about it all of the time.

Even with all of the speculation and coverage surrounding, and leading up to, Northwestern’s tournament invite, it all happened before Michael Wilbon held the T-Shirt, and all the ESPN Northwestern alums took a picture, and before the Wildcats won a great game Thursday against Vanderbilt, and head coach Chris Collins and football coach Pat Fitzgerald danced in the locker room, and Seth Meyers tweeted stuff, and Darren Rovell was happy, and other Northwestern alums were excited, and Julia Louis-Dryfuss was shown cheering on our screens a whole lot of times, and Mike Greenberg gave a speech today, and so on and so forth.

So, given all the hoopla, it’s not a surprise that many were actively rooting against the Wildcats…

Today’s loss may have been surprising to a few people who really liked Northwestern in this game. Gonzaga has only lost one game this year, but so what. When the brackets were announced, and then after the Zags struggled in the first half against South Dakota State on Thursday, some people were riding this Northwestern story…

The excitement probably wore offhen Gonzaga jumped out to a 20 point lead in the first half, leading at least one to lament his choice…

Northwestern fought hard to close the gap in the second half, but they came up short (with no help from a late controversial no-call in the second half leading to a Chris Collins technical foul).  The loss was, unsurprisingly, great news to some…

But even those who aren’t overjoyed by this aren’t going to feel bad for Northwestern and its alums. They had a really fruitful season. It was a great experience for all associated with the school.

So if you are going to feel bad for anyone, feel bad for this kid…

On to the next story.
