The Clemson Tigers’ come-from-behind 35-31 win in the college football national championship game Monday surprised many, considering how dominant Alabama was early on. It made a lot of the tweets from when the Crimson Tide were up 14-0 appear rather frozen in hindsight. However, one man’s red-hot takes on Clemson throughout the night stood out. That would be Fox Sports’ Skip Bayless, who recently insisted “I have consistently been correct with all these outrageous takes.” Let’s see how correct Bayless was this time around, starting with an early take on the Tigers’ mistakes:
That's just pathetic. If Clemson is going to make unforced errors like that, this game will be over quickly.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
He then went after Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson:
Did somebody kidnap the Deshaun Watson who unleashed on Saban's D a year ago? Who is this timid, lifeless guy?
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
Deshaun Watson just doesn't have it tonight. Badly missed 2 deep throws that were there. That 3rd-down pass wasn't even close. Trouble.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
(Watson finished with 420 passing yards and four touchdowns accounted for in what some have called the best championship performance since Vince Young in 2006.)
Bayless then returned to Clemson as a whole, and got even more emphatic:
This game has turned into an unfortunate joke. Clemson has lost heart because its leader has inexplicably lost his way.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
This championship game is about to be OVER.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
Even after Clemson started to make progress, Bayless still found much to criticize:
Awful kickoff. Awful punts. What's up with this Clemson kicking game? Keeps putting Tigers in jeopardy.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
So many dumb Clemson plays.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
Right now this game feels more like 28-7, Bama.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
WHAT IS IT WITH THESE CLEMSON KICKOFFS???
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
As time rolled on, Bayless still was confident the Tide would win (despite his pre-game prediction of a Clemson victory):
This game feels like Bama, 34-21.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
However, his tune then started to change:
I've been telling Shannon Sharpe all week: The only reason I'm going with Clemson is that Deshaun the nation's clutchest quarterback.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
Even after Clemson won, Bayless refused to give them credit, saying it was all about Alabama and head coach Nick Saban’s inadequacy:
Clemson just played a pretty lousy football game and still beat Saban. Saint Nick? Ain't Nick.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
Somebody tell Shannon Sharpe "St. Nick's" D just gave up 21 in the 4th q, 512 total yards and Deshaun threw for 420!!! Ain't Nick.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
Another classic championship game … with the reverse outcome. CONGRATS, CLEMSON, FOR HANGING TOUGH, PULLING IT OUT.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) January 10, 2017
And congrats to you, Skip, for once again consistently being correct with all your outrageous takes.
